Wanna know the funny thing? Readers often see James Potter (bully chad) in a positive light because he "changed" (wow such merit when everyone loves you and you have yoith handed on silver plate) but refuse to see snape as the hero he was because "trying to be good at the final part doesnt exempt you from having invented and used dark arts.
Snape invented dark arts to defend himself from being bullied, and he was a death eater because of living his entire life as a double agent sacrificing everything. What did James do? oh yes, being good looking and stopping being a nully because he settled down.
But James is heroic for the "effort" of dying agaisnt voldemort (such difficult and incredible task to get killed by the most powerful dark wizard) while snape is an asshole because (no matter the motives) he used dark arts. He actually saved potter multiple times, lived his entire life infiltrated in the most dangerous wizard's group, sacrificed everything and went on to certain death, but James is better because James was described as good looking Chad while Snape is described as an ugly nerd.
As a male you are your looks.
