VN like Umineko or Fate stay night (I know them because of the anime adaptations) are just text text and more text without any gameplay elements. Just reading and clicking the "next" button as if it was a never ending cutscene. The only thing that differentiates them from reading a book or manga is that you got character pics for the dialogues (only the mouth is animated) and some voice acting but that's it.
I get that the stories might be good but they still seem so boring to me and I'd rather read an actual novel or manga instead. If I'm playing a game I want it to have gameplay (kek) so this genre is def not for me. The only visual novel I really liked was Ace Attorney saga (only played the DS ones) but those have a few gameplay elements like investigating crime scenes, questioning witnesses, etc. It's not just pressing a button and ocassionally making dialogue choices.
