Male zebras rely on several cues to determine if a foal is theirs or not:
- Mating History: A stallion knows which mares in his herd he has mated with. If a foal is born shortly after a new male takes over the herd, he may assume it's not his.
- Behavioral Cues: Females with newborns conceived by other males might act more protectively, which could alert the stallion.
- Timeline Awareness: Stallions can use a rough awareness of gestation periods (about 12-13 months in zebras) to infer paternity based on when they mated with a mare.
