A Persons community is what makes it all possible. Very very few people are truly independent and completely depend on themselves. You may farm your food, but who makes your tractor/tools, who maintains them? Who maintains the internet so you can browse it? Who makes the phone? Who provides a shop for you to purchase that phone?

Thus, it is a part of social contract. One does not need to join the military to protect his nation. In fact, the army is not ideal. Modern warfate is demographics based.

You're not wrong, but you can love your country and 'protect' it without having to fight in wars. It can extend to simply showing an interest in all people who reside within your nation, which itself extends to politics. Caring for the well-being of your neighbor, and all that.
