I am from northern China, so the main staple cereal is wheat, just like western countries,we use wheat flour to make a kind of steamed bread called "馒头" or "馍" as our staple food

I was watching a Chinese movie and they were eating that. I wanna have it too but they don't sell it here. :(

supermarket sold 馒头(mantou) doesnot taste good enough, we selfmade it at home using traditional pan and firewood, tastes really good

Mantou tastes so dry and bland. They are basically poor man's bread with all the extra ingredients (egg, butter, milk) removed.

do you really eat more of that than rice?

Looks like a marshmello

bland is its charm.as a staple food it is not meant to eat alone but to eat with dishes just as rice. because it is bland so it can be paired with any dishes, that is why we don't add extra ingredients to it,it is pure flour

Tall light skinned chinese northerners = Millet

short subhuman protein starved Southern chinese + south east asians = rice.

Rice can more easily soak up sauce and has way more potential to pack in flavors. For example, I can't imagine how you can possibly eat curry with mantou but not rice.

I eat rice everyday, all day.

in the past northerners' staple food is millet, just several dozens years ago my parents eat a lot of it because of poverty, millet is much more nutritious than wheat but doesnot taste so good as staple food,so it is substituted by wheat in recent years, nowadays millet is much more expensive than wheat

Can you give me the recipe? I want to give it a try.

I could add minced meat in the middle like they do in the movie I saw.

we seldom eat curry

Northern Chinese = 6'5 pure Han slayer :chad:

Southern Chinese = 5'6 subhuman mongrel mixed with abos, curries and orang utans :incel:

These are like impossible to eat. Always get stuck in my throat.

at least Southern Chinese can cope with their superior food.

I have never made it myself, all my parents do. it quite take efforts, first you need to make the dough and mix it with yeast to ferment, it can take several hours to ferment, then you cut the dough into mantou shape and steam it in a pan, you can search it in the Internet,in my family we cook it in the traditional pan called ground pan and use firewood to cook it so it tastes better, but you can just use ordinary pan

it is not meant to eat alone, it should be paired with dishes
Japanese curry bricks are pretty common at grocery stores in China.

I think what you have in mind is Baozi, which mogs mantou out of oblivion.
baozi is meant to eat alone, so it is not suit for staple food
are you Chinese, where do you live

Thanks for the explanation, it's much appreciated. Turns out I was actually talking about baozi like @fast_curry pointed out.

i eat this everyday for breakfast

Looks very good, i always wanted steamed meat bun, too bad i don't have proper appliances to make one. I never liked rice, taste is so bland, wheat bread and pasta mog it to another dimension.

looks tasty af, I'd try them but they're not sold here and I'd probably screw up making them at home because I lack skill and appliances :feelsUgh:

Do you live in China?

yes,now in Beijing
I never see anyone from east asia on the internet. Never seen any Japanese, Korean, Chinese. Why is that?
Also, can you guys access internet in china or do you have to use VPN?

most east Asians don't use English forums, they have their own forums and their English is not good
this forum is not blocked, but most important websites like YouTube,Facebook, quora are blocked in China thus need a VPN to access
