hypothetically can you social engineer an ISP company to give out the identity of an ip address?

like what if you said something like:

"Hello, I am just wondering what my real ip is. on google it says this is my ip [insert victim's ip here] and I'm just wondering if this really is my ip address so I want you to confirm by telling me the name or address associated to it"

or:

"there was illegal and threatening content associated with this ip address. I am a private investigator and I'm seeking details to help get this guy be brought to justice. please tell me the name and other important details associated with it"

obviously Im not gonna try it out but Im just wondering how well this would work :feelsthink:

probably on the ones that out-source their work to third world countries like india. But im pretty sure they're trained to not give out info.

iirc IPs aren't associated with one address but rather internet companies give a changing IP address to a small area. So if they could give you that info the best that could say is "That IP is associated with nig road and parts of nog street in coon county" I think

how do feds track you down then? I thought they use ip address. there was one anon on 4chan that was identified and arrested for saying a police officer should be shot and he posted anonymously

I'm not really the best when it comes to answering these questions because all of my info comes from just shit I've heard over the years. I know sites monitor what device you use when you access their site and what IP that device has been on before and that's usually how alt accounts are banned. So maybe they could trace him through that?

This has next to zero chance of actually working.

Employees are trained on social engineering tactics, and they certainly won't surrender personal information about a customer to a "private investigator". By giving personal information about customers to malicious 3rd parties they'd be opening themselves up to lawsuits. It's gotten to the point where they've become schizo about it. Whenever I call any business for basic account info, I get asked like a dozen questions to verify my identity. One time they told me I had to verify the e-mail address i signed up with. I have a bunch of them, and couldn't remember which one I used and I guessed wrong, and then they told me I would have to come in person to verify my identity. This was AFTER I had already verified my full name, address, phone number, SSN, etc.

Of course the feds can obtain that info through warrants.

The ISPs store all kinds of data. The feds/cops just waltz in with a warrant and say we need every bit of data that comes through this cable/DSL stream under this name and address. Then the ISPs look you up in their databases and then process the request for information. After that it gets sent to analysis, which then turns into an intelligence package or product. That is then sent to the investigating officer(s) who will decide what to do (usually continue surveillance to gather enough info for an arrest, if necessary, or visit you for some preliminary questioning) and write a report about it afterwards.
