Always being reminded of it. I am not sure if lying does anything here because in the end, most people are able to tell. So, being overly sincere might be the way. The idea of "Hylic" come from Gnosticism, it's pretty much a set of old beliefs that has a heavy focus on knowledge, "gnosis" which means knowledge.

Gnosticism typically divides people in 3 categories:
"Hylic" : Those are the people who are only material, for gnostics, they do not posses a spirit nor a soul. They typically only live for what a human can feel and basic needs (Food, sleep, sex).
"Psychic": Those are the people who posses a soul, for the gnostics, they are between Hylic and pneumatic people, that they lack knowledge.
"pneumatic": Those are the people who posses a spirit.

For the gnostics, the earth and this universe as a whole has been created by the demiurge (the god that christians, muslim etc believes in) an imperfect and prideful god. The Demiurge birthed when "Sophia" (A divine being above the demiurge) decided to do something without being in union with her other divine half (this is crudely shortened).

The idea is that the demiurge is able to create both Hylics and Psychics for his earth, he is then free to punish and torture them as much as he wants as it is his world. For the gnostics Sophia sent a part of herself to bring "gnosis" and knowledge to earth, giving us spirits and knowledge to save ourselves from the demiurge and break ouselves free from the material world.



The interesting thing with gnosticism is that it doesn't have any emphasis on fear. Most followed religions are ones of fear where you are merely following blindly a cult. The beliefs of gnosticism say that what truly matters is to break yourself from fear and gather knowledge instead. It takes heavily from greek philosophers and philosophy in general.

I do not fully believe gnosticism but it is the religion that makes the most sense for explaining human behaviors and why god is a piece of shit.
