Once I was swimming off the coast of Sicily. I wore flippers and a snorkel.
All of a sudden I felt a gentle, loving and warm caress on my leg. A wonderful touch. Divine.
So I dived under to see what was going on and saw a water vortex. It was beautiful and I stared at it, mesmerised.
But then the gentle caress started to turn into a nasty pull on the leg so I swam back up, out of fear and fright, and used full flipper power to swim back to the shore as fast as I could.
An hour or so later I heard emergency sirens and at lunch it was mentioned a young man had drowned while swimming not far from where I had been. I often think if it was the vortex that had pulled him down to his doom. He had been seduced by its gentle caress.
I still give thanks to them big, professional divers flippers I had on that gave me the power to resist it's death grip and I've never returned to the sea out of fear of once again meeting that cruel vortex.
