How come no teacher defended me against my bullies?

I remember being in class and my bully would abuse me right in front of my teachers and they would just look at me with pity or simply not do anything.
I wonder why these teachers have to be such cowards when they have the power to stop their students from being bullied

I was also bullied and nothing ever was done about it.
I was even framed by my bullies for some things that got me expelled a few times back in school. Serious stuff too that could have gotten me put on a list. But the principal and teachers never gave a fuck. They went on the bullies side.
