Hire a teacher like for any instrument

guitars are a shit

there's some software you can use apparently to learn really fast, guitar pro or something

who cares though this little-league shit is no longer a statusmaxx in 2018

Put it up your butthole

I have this shitty guitar at my house for 4 years now . _ . It's just there in the corner, at least it looks nice so it's basically like buying an expensive painting because I've tried playing it only twice for 10 mins.

This. Also, use tabs online. Lots of people do lessons and covers on YouTube.

I'm a 12-year vet FYI.

I recommend a teacher. Someone who can teach you proper fundamentals. My growth was stunted for a while as I had to re learn right-hand positioning, as I used to rest my palm on the bridge, which is harmful. A teacher would've never let this bad happen develop.

Learn theory. I know this is gay and useless if you just want to play Green Day, but it makes understanding music more fun.

Don't be a gearhead. Get yourself a lower-to-mid range guitar... you're set. You don't need a multi-thousand dollar guitar to be good. There is diminishing returns on guitars past the ~$600 price point.

Just play. I'm serious. I've play 30-mins a day minimum 5 days a week. I enjoy it... it may be my best cope. Learn to enjoy it. Accept that it will have zero affect on whether you ascend.

teacher. trust me. im a musicel.

To add on from that, I recommend a cheap Ibanez as those are the easiest to shred on from my experience.
@Doug I do not like Ibanez guitars (the two I've played I found to be incredibly rough to play, namel with the body shape and neck shape), but they are liked by many. If you're looking for something specific, I'd sooner recommend a PRS SE model, a higher end Epiphone, or a mid level Schecter, depending on your musical interests. Many worship low end Mexican fender guitars as well, but I have had a negative experience with them as well.

Regardless of all that, get anything mid range and just play it. Generally, guitar models are tastes and not quality. My tastes favor PRS and not Ibanez, but many disagree.

What Ibanez models were they?

If they were RG then I understand. He should go for the S series as they have thinner necks.
One was an RG, I don't remember the other (it was higher end). They both had these pencil-thin unfinished necks that had no depth. There was nowhere to rest my palm. It almost felt like playing a piano sideways if that makes sense. Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of the 50's Gibson baseball bat neck either... there is a happy medium and Ibanez necks always stray too thin IMO.

I also like finished/painted/glossed necks. I know there's the speed meme but I never noticed a difference. My latest guitar is the first guitar I've bought in a while with an unfinished neck (its a Carvin strat clone so I wanted ot be authentic), and it takes some getting used to. With thicker, glossier necks, I feel like I'm playing something substantial and not a keytar.
