Their countries are shitholes, there’s few job opportunities there so they have to immigrate. Usually to Canada. But to get a work visa they need an education from the country. Completing a course cost like 25. 000 dollars. And keep in mind these are third-worlders, they are already poor. Plus you got living expenses on top of that.
Some parents mortgage their home, but that only covers a part of the cost. The students must spend every waking moment not studying wagelsaving to pay for rest of the school costs plus living expenses.
Living conditions are usually shit as well. Unless you wanna commute for like four hours a day on an overcrowded bus you have to share some cramped rat nest with several other people. There often aren't enough space on the buses so you have to wait for another one in the freezing cold and be late for class.
Loneliness is guaranteed in many cases. All your waking time is spent studying or working. There’s no time to socialize. In the rare case you have free time, you spend it relaxing at home from all the stress. Not that you’re gonna be willing to waste the precious leftover money on bowling, cinema or whatever anyway.
And if you fail the exam, you are beyond screwed. It’s not like you can afford to do another year. No, you have to go back home, deal with all the shame and guilt from failing. Work several years in that shithole until you have saved up enough money for another try at POSSIBLE success. (If you can find a job at all back home) But many are already broken from the first failure and just rope.
