In the 50's, black neighbourhoods in the US were just as crime ridden as they are today. Blacks were poorer on average as they are today. Yet, black musicians sang sweet, sultry tones about finding a lovely dame to kiss by the blue moon - The Platters is a perfect example of such a group. There was no bustin' a cap in people's asses in music in 1955, even by black artists.
When women entered the work force and didn't have to rely on the traditional marriage set up that basically went: "if a nigga got a job at the factory, he can get a wife, no matter how ugly his ass his".
So when women's hypergamy began, what followed...? A new type of hypermasculine music that was meant to scoop up these women. You hadn't really seen people singing about murdering eachother before and wearing big golden chains and driving fancy cars. It's all masculine peacocking to trigger the females to select them, and as Hip Hop became popular, it became the way to get out the hood = get high quality females.
Rappers flaunt their wealth and aggressive behaviour like a warlord in a cave, and it worked, 50Cent got a Harem of hot models throughout the years and Diddy...well he got his fair share of whatever.
The point is, if we had still had traditional marriage, where a job and a place to live qualified you to be an eligible bachelor, people didn't have go around singing about emptying clips into opps every two seconds. Men, by nature, need to be seen and stand out to be selected for mating. Of course all the successful rappers look good too.
