My dad has autism, is a complete textbook definition of a STEMcel with zero emotional or social intelligence. Talking to him is like talking to a brick wall, he could not even look me in the eye ever when I tried to, he just looks at a wall or the floor. I'm also a neurotic sperg but at least I can look people in the eye. As if that alone isn't a death sentence, especially today, (I wouldn't exist if he has grown up today), he is also ugly, was completely bald by 30 and had heart/other diseases so I basically lose in every department. I've always had severe breathing problems on top of other things. It should be classified as abuse to have kids as genetic TRASH.

Intellect or other cognitive capacities like emotional intelligence... assuming you're fortunate and brilliant enough these might make you influential or even wealthy, but the probability of a disproportionately painful life is still too high. And worse yet, our cultures don't even let the people we hate check out painlessly. It'd be OK if the government supported physician assisted suicide for people who've tried but continually fail at life. But as it is, given how important looks are, if you're stuck in a very painful life, either you just linger for decades until disease... takes you or you find a risky, possibly painful way to check out. Too unfair for a very ugly kid.

Worse, the deciding being is passing on to the child characteristics that are objectively known to place people at significant disadvantage. And worse still, despite the oceans of data we have that children become their own beings--not necessarily the beings parents hope for or try to mold, there don't appear solid reasons to assume the child would take up coping mechanisms their parents believe to be most effective. Meanwhile, once here, the child definitely suffers from the cruelties, hypocrisies, discriminations and other injustices that saturate our culture. I get that these seem like trivial comments to people who want to be parents, but without allowing citizens legal access to painless ways to check out, society can be subjecting people to life sentences of torture.

Things were different in my father's time when betabuxxing was still an option. My father was born in the 1940s, is a balding sub-5'8 manlet with Asperger's, and wears trifocals. I know I probably am too laid-back to interfere with a suicide unless I have a personal connection to someone (and even then I'm not sure what I would do) although for legal reasons I wouldn't help (to avoid punishment). Aside from 'this person is important to me and I'm hoping they'll change their minds if they have more time', I could only see interfering if it was a paid job and a necessity of duty for me to interfere.

I only talk about self determination among/for adults. Almost no one is going to agree to minors being entitled to judge when they've had enough. Living means suffering at some point. For a lot of us, at too many points. And they will happily admit that life's not fair, but they won't allow any adult who has had enough of inequity and suffering to leave. They'll censor any evidence, no matter how credible, you offer to substantiate your argument. They'll flood you with platitudes. They'll incarcerate you and torture you--then give you the bill for it. But once you're here because your parents decided to squeeze you out or because they were too stupid or lazy or poor to use effective birth control, you're stuck unless you have the iron balls to overcome a species-wide survival hard-wiring and devise your own exit strategy.
