They are basically China but with every freedom China does not have and there is no known dispute for Macau because Macau used to a Portuguese colony and China had very good relations with Portugal thus they respect Mcau. It's ultra mega safe, filthy rich, super clean and efficient. Definitely a must-visit or live place if you are capable of learning languages. Unfortunately, portuguese is only spoken by about 1% of people there these days, the language was long, it used to almost full portuguese-speaking place. But you can still find a lot of signs and such written in portuguese.

Like I said, I can't remember the website that had all the costs of living of many places compared to average local wages or national minimum wage. I can't find it because the link I had is long gone. But you can look up the average rent, cost of living or instead, you can look for a less formal place to stay in. The best option would be somewhere out of the city in a small but still cosy and comfortable flat or house. Stay away from renting something at the heart of a city or anywhere near to it. It's a trap and waste of money.
