There was a good video on how vice changed from interviewing cannibal warlords to being a soy factory. IIRC the essence was roughly: They had tons of views but no way to monetize because their content was too advertiser-unfriendly. They bought offices and hired staff all around the world and scaled up their business with investor funding, so they needed to find a way to become profitable. They got famous online but would have been better suited for television with their original content.
