The whole hamas action was just to bait Israel into bombing it. The war can be summed up as

1. chimpout and kill 1000 something Israelis, take some of them as bargaining chip
2. operation is done, now go back to hide in Gaza
3. Israel being as violent as they are, levels Gaza
4. Opens up a few escape routes due to international pressure
5. Hamas' escape through these routes (how do you catch something as decentralized as hamas)
6. Leave a skeleton crew to guard the hostages, and scattered around the town, including in some hospitals (if you believe in Jewish propaganda)
7. Jews, being savages, bomb hospitals regardless if hamas are in there or not
8. Most casualty are civilians, not hamas
9. PR victory for hamas, because palenstinans are largely the actually victims even if they're being used as a chess piece
10. More recruits for hamas
