The funny thing about this whole situation is that the same "college educated" woman that look down on mechanics and carpenters probably wasted their time in college partying and barely passing their courses. It boils down to the fact women are far more obsessed with social status than men. Us men don't care if a woman sells cosmetics fallen off the back of a lorry on eBay or a best selling author, as long as she is a non-fat, likeable person.

And women tend to buy into the message that any guy with a bachelors degree is almost always a superior male in a higher social sphere than those without. A women with any kind of bachelors degree, even one in Gender Studies from Bumblefuck U., will unconsciously assume she is just waaay better than any man who doesn't have one - no matter what trade or professional qualification he has, or no matter how good and smart he is.

She may fell sorry for a man with a college diploma but without a degree who works a lower status job, but she will resent him, and feel like she is the equivalent of a medieval 10/10 princess marrying a peasant.
