If they had conquered most of the world under it, they probably would have done so and had some justification for it. Religion is a social tool and it being wrong on the factual level is also used as a social tool by people to establish their intellectual superiority over others.

It being wrong is kind of independent of it being more useful than not / of it satisfying some basic human psychological needs and wants.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still a total atheist, but that is no longer something I would build an identity around. It's too easy, too cheap, and has not proven itself as an indicator of higher character in my experience. Most atheists I know believe similarly nonsensical things as any believer. It was only cool when it was real counter culture and you would get burned at the stake for it, so to speak. Once you were allowed and encouraged to laugh at and dissect religious ideas the quality of the average atheist quickly dropped towards the population average.
