Fear of appearance discrimination and its influence on well-being across cultures

Bluepillers be like: "Lookism? What is that, you're just an entitled rightwing white male, you wouldn't survive a day if you faced actual oppression like racism:soy::soy:!"

Meanwhile, actual, literal BIPOC (well, Japanese, but you get the point), and therefore potential victims of racism according to liberals, scientists talking about lookism be like: "As lookism and racism are so similar, we took a scale used for decades to measure previous racial discrimination and lightly modified it to measure people's fear of encountering lookism. Although we are measuring fear of encountering it rather than past experiences of it, said fear will still necessarily be informed by past experiences of it, as well as believed prevalence and chance of re-encountering it in society. We also had to change the potential contexts in which it is encountered from just school and workplace as it is in the original racism scale to any place, as lookism can occur anywhere:bigbrain:."

Also, they cut out the questions about fearing physical aggression and only focused on verbal one, but that was only because the racial discrimination scale they were changing already consistently finds physical aggression items to be by far the least endorsed there, so if somebody wants to play people's fears about lookism down based on that, they'd also need to acknowledge this:feelshaha:.

The original PEDQ survey results indicated that the means for threat/aggression were the lowest across all ethnic groups (Contrada et al., 2001). Therefore, we redirected our focus from threat/aggression to verbal aggression, specifically insults. Brondolo et al. (2005) included the place setting, distinguishing between discrimination at school and in the workplace as separate dimensions. However, because lookism can occur anywhere, restricting discrimination to school or workplace settings prevents the capture of discrimination that may occur elsewhere. Furthermore, specifying locations is a different approach from categorizing the nature of discrimination. Therefore, in this study, we excluded the setting factor.

The part that comes right after what I just quoted is pretty hilarious in its simplicity:feelshaha:.

In addition, good-looking individuals are more likely to be asked out on dates or receive affirmative responses (Chappetta & Barth, 2016; Feingold, 1990). Therefore, we believe that appearance-based discrimination can lead to rejection in romantic contexts. Consequently, this study focuses on insults, exclusion/devaluation and romantic rejection to elucidate the features of discrimination.

This is such a "didn't get the memo" moment from those researchers if, like I'd say most of us here, you're so used to people lying about how important looks are for men, how women aren't shallow and only care about your personality and values, and so on. Somebody should let those scientists know that women only care about you not being an asshole and that the bar for men is literally in hell:feelswhat::feelskek:.

Overall an interesting study. More blackpilling for any Japanese users we might have here than the American ones, since the Japanese in the study consistently feared lookism more than Americans, and money noticeably lowered Americans' loneliness, while it didn't Japanese's one.

The cultural difference could be interpreted by the effect of one control variable (income): individuals who reported greater annual income were less lonely in the United States (β = −0.17), whereas no significant effect of income was found in Japan (β = −0.04). In both cultures, higher levels of worry about imperfection and social appearance anxiety, combined with lower levels of hope for perfection, were associated with higher levels of loneliness. Additionally, the direct path of insult to loneliness was significant.

The bolded part just made me chuckle because I haven't noticed it before:feelskek:. Wow, the more people fear being insulted for their appearance, the lonelier they are? Damn, I sure wonder what's the underlying mechanism behind this:waitwhat:. Could it be that people start fearing it because it happens to them, because their appearance is easy to insult, and the more frequently it happens, the more they both fear it and the less friends they have, because every person insulting them is one who won't befriend them? Nah, I'm sure R*dditors will find a bluepilled explanation for this that makes those insecure lonely people seem like the architects of their own misery:feelsclown::society::feelsugh:.

And the part about money lowering loneliness makes me wonder whether the US being more unequal than Japan doesn't play a part in it. We know for example that the frequency of kissing in relationships across countries positively correlates with Gini Index (a measure of income inequality), which makes sense. The more unequal a country is, the more highly income-unequal relationships happen in it, and in those, the woman (because basically no women date down income-wise, only men are willing to date people poorer than them in any real amounts) thus has a pretty big incentive to lovebomb the man as much as possible and to keep him interested.

I wonder whether friendships follow a similar logic, the more unequal a country is, the more unequal friendships happen, where the poorfags have a strong incentive to keep the richfag friend interested in them. Plus, only people in their 20s took part in this study, and there's definitely more young Americans in the upper levels of their country's income distribution than young Japanese.

The science has always been on our side. The only thing detractors of the blackpill have are anonymous online stories.

Good stuff either way. Bookmarked.

I can't help but wonder what caused the shift away from realism about society like this into the self-delusion found nowadays that this kind of stuff doesn't matter when objectively and empirically it does.
It certainly wasn't religion because I'm almost certain it happened after secularism took control. Was it neoliberalism? Fuck if I know

I do too. Some old media admits this reality and tried to get people to fight against it, at least in themselves (like the uggo in Goonies, or even shit like The Man Who Laughs).

Sure what's his face is an ugly sonovabitch but he's still a human being. And his character is still good.
Now? Even the villains have to be gorgeous.

:panties::panties::panties: another gift from the OG, hurray! Always look forward to them. I have nothing to add, but always interesting how researchers and people in general openly acknowledge lookism and its impact, but only if its not us making the claims. Recently for instance I saw a YT short where this foid got rhyno for her massive beak and the doctor reacting and comments were all positive. Here are example videos of what I am talking about:

Another example I see constantly is when some kid mauled by a dog or something gets surgery on gofundme and people are like I hope they can fix his face and he can live a normal life lmfao. Normies constantly acknowledge lookism, just not for us. At the end of the day, this entire debate was never about "fax 'n logic" but just value judgements. Ugly men are valued less = our opinion is worthless.
