I doubt if the author meant it metaphorically, there are some commentaries of Patanjali Yoga Sutras by other monks of later period..but too headache to find and read. I like to believe this powers were real , because one of the pillars of Yoga was " Non lying" and always speaking based on experience...who knows

Then read the English translation of Brihadaranyaka Upanishad and read the commentary of Mandukya Upanishad by Adi Shankaracharya. Read the biography of Adi Shankaracharya, because he was the first OG to give this theory of Advaita Vedanta or non dual supreme consciousness...these three texts will open your brain like a volcanic explosion
