Several roadblocks by the Last Generation climate group led to traffic jams and obstructions on Berlin's streets at the start of the week. In the morning, the police spoke of more than 30 actions in the city area where climate activists stood on the street, were stuck there or held banners. Traffic was temporarily paralyzed on the A100. Motorists were stuck in traffic jams for up to two hours between Dreieck Charlottenburg and Kreuz Schöneberg, according to the traffic information center (VIZ). The police took more than 40 activists into custody.
Drivers sometimes reacted aggressively to the blockades. The Last Generation shared a video on Twitter that is said to show an attack on two activists. A man pulls two protesters across the street by their hair. A reporter from the German Press Agency also observed drivers trying to pull activists off the road. In another case, according to the last generation, an angry passer-by slapped the cell phone out of the hand of a filming activist, as reported by the Berlin "Tagesspiegel". The police are aware of individual cases, a police spokeswoman said. She appealed to road users not to take the law into their own hands, because doing so would make them liable to prosecution.
The traffic jams have now cleared up throughout the city, and according to the traffic information center, drivers don't have to wait longer than ten minutes. The districts of Spandau and Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf were the first to be affected by the actions in the morning. According to a police spokeswoman, seven activists stuck to Ernst-Reuter-Platz and five to Hardenbergstrasse in Charlottenburg. According to the police, the blockades also took place in the morning on Pappelallee and Danziger Strasse in Prenzlauer Berg, on Tempelhofer Damm in Tempelhof and on the A100 on Konstanzer Strasse. A police spokeswoman spoke of a "dynamic situation".
According to information from the "Tagesspiegel" at least 15 ambulances were hindered during emergency trips. Rescue workers only arrived at patients with significant delays. The rescue service of the Berlin fire brigade is in a state of emergency, only a small number of ambulances are available. According to the traffic information center, bus traffic was also affected by the blockades: there were numerous delays, diversions, cancellations and line closures.
According to the police, up to 500 officers and a helicopter were on the move in the city area to prevent or quickly end the blockades. According to a police spokeswoman, however, it sometimes took longer to remove stuck demonstrators from the streets because they used a different adhesive. When people detach themselves, the asphalt is sometimes damaged.
The federal government criticized the increased actions in the capital. "Of course, we do not support such forms of protest," said government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit. He emphasized that this federal government had done more for climate protection than any government before it. In a parliamentary democracy there are opportunities to express criticism. "Such massive disruptions to public order (...), I have my doubts as to whether that serves the purpose."
The climate group had announced that they wanted to try to paralyze the entire capital. "We no longer accept that this government does not respect our constitution. We no longer accept that the government does not have a plan to stop the destruction of our livelihoods. We resist now!" shared the last generation with. The actions are not time-limited. They should only end when demands have been met.
The group complains about the lack of climate protection and demands the establishment of a social council with random members. She is calling on politicians to come up with a plan to achieve the 1.5 degree target, which is intended to prevent the worst consequences of global warming. On May 2nd, Transport Minister Volker Wissing met with activists from the group.
I really hope that someday, one of the wageslaves in their car snaps and runs these fucktards over. I really want to see that. They deserve to get run over.
