I have the choice between taking a light coding + design course at the highest ranked university in aus vs doing a software dev major in another decent university

Which one is better for a lowiqcel like me? I have shit for brains so I can barely do math but would it be more worth it to do software dev in the long run?

I'm not a coder exactly, but I do a lot of coding for my job. Having to do frontend (dealing with different browsers, spending all my time fooling around with CSS trying to get a button to move over a pixel) sounds like a nightmare to me. I like being able to work on a program that's going to run on a known server, just deals with data, and needs to be made correct and efficient. In the backend vs. frontend dichotomy, that's backend. But, that's me.

I honestly have no idea because I'm also low iq.

Do you like the idea developing things that will be used and seen by an enduser? If so, I would consider FE development. I think the problems you face in BE development are more diverse, and feel more challenging than FE development. I'm not particularly concerned about the enduser experience of the highlevel aspects of the product, and I'm more interested in building systems. Hence, I lean towards BE development.

Also, I wouldn't be too hard on yourself in terms of intelligence. If you have interest in a topic or idea, just pursue it with effort and focus. I failed HS math courses, but I'm taking graduate level courses in Mathematics now, and I'm doing well. Did my IQ go up 20 - 30 point? It was just a change of interest; you're good at what you focus hard on.

thanks man this was really helpful

how will it affect my employability if I went with the front-end major? im more of a visual person but people have said that having a more technical degree helps a lot more with finding a job

NP bro :feelsokman:

I don't know how your school works, but I would be cautious about specializing in something too early. If I were you, I would do a major in general Software Engineering or Computer Science. They are broad degrees that allow you to do work in FE development or BE development if you so choose.

There is something also called FullStack Development, which from my understand encompasses skills from both FE development and BE development (I believe these folks are also paid really well due to their broad skillset). It is just something to think about.

I'm not trying to scare you, but parts of FE development could be automated out my Artificial Intelligence algorithms, but I don't know the how reliable these things are atm. To future proof yourself, I would try to go with a broad degree, but you should be fine as long as you teach yourself new technologies, languages and paradigms as you go.

Front-end development is cucked and soy (because I don't enjoy it). I've always hated CSS with a passion, although Bootstrap makes it more tolerable.
