Good article. Britain used to have ~120,000 dock workers, they were good union jobs a man could own a house and support a whole family on and still have spending money left over.

Today dock workers are still the same good union jobs, but Britain only has 15,000 dock workers. As technological progress means ports need a lot less workers than before. Similar declines in jobs from technological automation were seen in many industrial areas of the economy such as mining and steel mills.

This place sounds like a port town whose economy was based on the dockworkers.
