You've seen Saving Private Ryan, haven't you ? D-Day scene is very impressive. I saw it on theatre with a Jew friend I had in those times. He hid under his theatre sit.
But at least this movie gives you an overview of this horror. Battles, bombings, it has been the most catastrophic thing white men did to each other.

Not to mention that it was primarily a series of naval engagements. If your ship got torpedoed, if your plane didn't have enough fuel to make it back to the carrier, you drowned, or you died of exposure, or saltwater positioning, or got eaten by sharks -- like what happened to the crew of the Indianapolis. Dying in the ocean sounds worse than dying on land.

And Pearl Harbor attack too.
Ultimately, they decided to surrender to the US instead of Stalin who was about to invade Japan mainland. Nukes were the perfect excuse for surrender. Japanese couldn't care less about two destroyed cities, after the US Army had already destroyed 65 other cities during the same summer.

The US Army did a ton of things in France after war to stop the endless violence accumulated. However, this violence went out during the 1954 Algerian War (the french equivalent of Viet-Nam). Without the US help, we would have become a USSR region (like the rest of devastated Europe).

Military strategy shows that being highly trained and equipped is far more efficient than a gigantic army using muskets. Which means only long-term guerilla can give a temporary victory over a well-equipped army.
