That's how it always was, and it worked early on but shit kept building up, getting more convoluted and eventually it all started to fall apart. TBH 4 "good" entries is still far better than most succeful horror franchises and FNAF was never an IP that you could make an endless amount of narrative content for without it going off the rails in a similar way that it did.
