BTW I have no proof of it, but it is my understanding that Rome was founded by the sons of a prostitute. According to the legend, Remus and Romulus were "raised by a female wolf".

It would be silly to believe a literal interpretation of this legend. In many cultures, humans are compared to animals that best match their behavior. Even today, we call "bitches" promiscuous women for instance. I've read somewhere a female wolf was the animal chosen to call whores in Ancient Rome, and it's not too difficult to imagine why.
I personally believe that many legends and myth of Ancient civilizations were alluding to sexual concepts that should be hidden from children, but where deemed important enough to be transmitted through generations anyway. So metaphors and allegories were used.
So yeah, I bet that Remus and Romulus were sons of a whore, or at least raised by one. I actually don't know the myth well. I've just checked it and apparently they were the sons of a vestal virgin and the god Mars. So maybe this means a soldier raped a vestal and the twins were abandoned, only to be saved by a whore for some reason. Something like that. Who knows.
Anyway, a fun fact : in my native language, French, which is pretty much a direct descendant of Latin, the expression "
fils de pute", "son of a whore", is an extremely common insult. I think it is also very common in Spanish : "
hijo de puta". I don't think this is a coincidence. I assume that sons of prostitutes grow up in a very peculiar environment and develop a very particular personality. I mean, it's not a big stretch to imagine that such boys grow up to become misogynistic men, and then it would not be a surprise if two of them ended up founding one of the greatest patriarchal society the World has ever known.
