This is gonna be a electric maxing 1.5 thread to give some new details on how to be a effective electritian since I have a bit more experience then I previously did. And this info should be beneficial if you already read the origonal thread.
Meters: Im gonna say it like this. Your problably gonna want 2 types of meter for most of your work. A clamp meter for most of your stuff and a super nerdy multimeter for those extra detailed jobs. But most of the time youll be using a clamp meter. I my self use a jaw meter instead specifically a fluke T6-1000 pro. Thats because the jaw when the ground is properly set up can measure voltage with a bit less accuracy then the prongs making it good for wire voltage without needing to cut the wire open. But you might want the more nerdy multimeter for stuff like capacitors and other electrical componets but get a decent clamp meter or jaw meter first.
Meter usage: So for the 3 basic measurements from your meter of choice. For amperage if you got a clamp meter or god forbid a clamp adapter on a multi meter you can put the clamp on only one side of the circut if you want a reading. The clamp can only measure amperage difference so if you put the clamp on both sides of the circut then itll read near zero if not zero. If you cant use a clamp you will need your am-meter to be in series with the circut to get amperage then if you cant use a clamp. Voltage, both amps and voltage need to be done with a live circut. For voltage most of the time you will be using the prongs. Always put in the common side first you dont carry a load on you for saftey reasons. And when you done measing voltage with the prongs remove the load side first so you dont have a hazard on your hands. If you got the Fluke T6 1000 pro then use the common cord with a gator clamp to set up a ground either on ground cord or on a metal peice of ground like a metal junction box. If you dont set the ground and use the jaw to measure voltage your reading will give you peack to peack and youll need to use the RMS equation witch is:
(E reading ×.5) ×.71
For ohmage I think the circut needs to be dead but a dead circut works unles its a open line. And for keep a eye for DC devices. If your meter is set to AC and you use use it on a DC circut you wont get jack shit. For wattage just get the voltsge and amperage and multiply. I dont think most meters will give you the wattage.
Jobs: electrical jobs will vary a bit. Do not underestimate the amount of construction like work you will be doing. I needed a 400$ rottary hammer to replace a faulty junction box at some old ladies house. Turns out the fuckers who installed the junction box used black tar like glue to mount the box so my only option was to use a rotary hammer to drill small enough holes in the concreat wall to install screws through the box and into the concreat wall. But not just that youll also have to worry about bending metal pipes as there needed, you cant just leave wire fucking exposed and that will work your body. But there will be construction like work to come when the time comes. So dont forget some pepsi for dat energy.
Recepticles: more commonly known as outlets heres what I have to say about them. Always use the side screw method. Do not half ass it and use the back stab method. But you want the wire hooks to go in clockwise to bend the load side upwards and the common side down wards as the opisite sides of a recepticle will flip the turn direction. When you got either all 3 or 5 wires installed use electrical tape to cover any expeosed copper wire and the screws to prevent house fires as the wrong material touching power will burn shit the fuck up. Be sure the voltage is either the same before you changed the recepticle or very close to 120. It might be a bit bigger or smaller but it shouldn't be that far off.
Another thing is DO NOT REPLACE A RECEPTICLE ON A LIVE CIRCUT!!!!! I treid doing that and a shit load of sparks flew in my face. Turn off the power first. Your life is more valuable then saving 3 minutes of time. And so is avoiding a fucking house fire.
Other tools: If you get your self a milwakee or klein many things in one pliers your almost all set. Make sure it can snip, strip and crimp wires along with having holes for bending the hook for recepticles. But after you get those be sure to get wires snippers as itll make snipping wires quickly in awkward spaces way easier the the all in one electric pliers. Insulated drivers are mostly beneficial for fucking with live circuts but a 13 in one driver with wing-nuts can be good enough as long as you can garentee the circut it dead. Get a outlet tester to ensure wiring is correct but its pretty easy to install proper wireing on a outlet without fucking it up. Flashlights. These are way more usefull then I thought they would be but if you need to kill the whole powr and work in a dark area, no amount of carrots or eye dialation will help you. A drill or impact driver is more of a luxury tool most of the time unless your doing that construction like work then its a necessity.
Saftey: As I said earlier dont fucking replace a outlet on a live circut. Other wise youll either get spark all around you or get shocked and you dont want to get shocked especially if its large amount of DC. Then again you'll likely wont have to worry about large amounts of DC as thats common for hand held batteterys or industrial settings.
Lockout/tagout can prevent a fucktard from powering a circut your working on. Usefull for circut breackers at a house but fucking mandatory on inductrial settings were voltage is gona either be higher then residential, DC or even both. Keep in mind low voltage just means under 1KE. If your doing somthing dangerous, have somone with you. You dont want to be in LD 50 situation in a crawl space or attick on your fucking own. Having somone with you will set off Deaths fuck-off orometer. Your not ready to meet Eliot so be safe. Dont be like me and go in a crawl space or attic maskless. I went under my grandmas crawl space without a mask full of rat shit and spent a whole fucking month feeling light headed with symptoms of low blood oxygen. Also if I was really unlucky I couldve either get hanta virus or rabies. 2 things that have a very high mortality rate. Get your rabies vaccine before entering any residential trades or even comercial. Some dog owners might be retarded enough to keep rabid dogs alive if there crawl space dont have rabid rats/mice. Always check that the circut is dead even if you think its dead. Other wise you might as well give a loaded desert eagle a blow job. Ive heard stories of both JMWs and aprentices saying a circut is dead just for them to actually turn off the wrong circut and get somone else shocked.
Other saftey: part of the job is driving around including driving a big ass van to these places. You need to learn how to safley drive a super heavy vehcile. Know what heavy vehciels need more distance to breack but also because they sit higher from the ground they will be bad at seeing obstables close to you and you will have way more blind spots then even a toyota Hilux. Get gud at driving. Make sure your tools and hardware is nicly secure so shit dont fly away to fucko land. Otherwise your inside of trade vehcile will look worst then my search hystory.
Lunch: from what I hear most trade men will take there lunch past the half point or make it to when there lunch is over they will have 2 hours left at the job. When you take your lunch your body will unwind a bit and when your body digests food, it takes up some energy making you a bit tired so because of that alot of trdesmen will take there lunch especially if its a hour lunch really close to when there shift ends. Though not a garentee.
Aprentiship: regardless if your journey man is right or wrong, just suck it the fuck up. That journey man is half boss and half resume. When you are a journeyman your self then you call a little bit more shots. Also if there a master electritian then itll be a coin toss between being very good at there thing or being very arrogant. I see it with alot of old people and unfortunately the arrogant ones think there smarter then Nicholi Tesla.
Conclusion: I am not liscensed for shit or even doing a electrical job just yet. But as time passes by I do get better st my thing and get better at it Ill probably have either learned or remember new shit that Id want on this thread but oh well, fucking hell.
I hope this can spark some trade fuel into yall. Be a trade-cell. Make good ass money. And take a bit more controll of your lives. And I wish you some inspiration from this. Keep in mind this is a adder to the origonal electric maxing thread.
