It's a natural instinct to seek shelter in a hostile environment. Similar to today's NEET's avoiding work, draft dodgers instinctively knew that going to war would not benefit them individually in any way. If anything, they are intelligent and courageous for defying the government and staying home to provide for their families, instead of permanently leaving their kids without a father. Even if they made it home, their PTSD would scar their families for life. The only men crazy enough to voluntarily sign up for the draft were indoctrinated with Uncle Sam propaganda. How is HItler gassing the Jews any different than us massacring millions of Native Americans (not that they're so innocent, but still).
"Freedom loving Americans" share similar DNA as their Nazi counterparts. WWII was really an Anglo civil war.
