the first time I heard the word incel was in 2019, and it was usually just another way of saying basement dweller or someone with no social life. at the time using virgin as an insult was quite common and admitting you have no gf was like admitting you never showered.

example:
Person A: I watch a lot of anime and drink mountain dew. I haven't showered in 8 years.

Person B: man you're such an incel

it wasn't until around 2021 when I noticed it being used to refer to misogynists specifically and not just people that struggle to get laid and watch anime all day

Wasn't it the opposite? I first came to know what incels were when the Joker movie was in theaters in 2019, since there were articles fearmongering about possible "incel violence" at screenings.

2020 onwards it seemed the term went mainstream and just became another shameful insult like "virgin," losing its original connotation

it has became more political now. Im noticing it being used on anyone that's right-wing, even if they get laid alot like enron musk and donald trump. and people are starting to distinguish between virgin and incels, when before the words were just used interchangebly. might just be different echochambers Im lurking on though
