What I mean is that I don't choose friends based on their gender.

Also there's nothing bad about being friends with a girl first and then dating her. That's a perfectly valid path to a relationship. It's not worth being so selective and technical about it that you end up missing out on opportunities because then you'll just end up single for longer.
