Discussion Do you guys pay for a VPN? I used to but they’ve gotten ridiculously expensive

Where I’m at torrenting is basically off limits without a VPN since you’ll get ISP letters and eventually they won’t provide internet service to you.

I used to pay for a VPN but they’re so fuckin expensive now I might as well practically buy the content. Of course the content itself is too expensive so I often just don’t have anything to do outside of work since I’m poor.

I even worry about posting on this site without some layer of additional anonymity because I’d probably get fired if what I really thought was known. How do you guys handle that? I really miss being able to torrent games because frankly 70 bucks for new games is fucking insane and I’m not made of money and streaming services are fractured dogshit nowadays too. But damn stuff like NordVPN is stupid expensive too. Wish I was in a country where they didn’t care sometimes.

I earn less today in inflation adjusted terms by a mile than I earned the day I was hired despite having years more experience and being way more productive now. Thanks I haven’t really delved into that as far as torrents go. Can you torrent through tor in a fashion where it hides your IP and traffic how VPNs can? I’ll have to look into it. And yeah, the US can be pretty fuckin gay about sending ISP letters and even having some providers pull service it’s stupid as fuck. If the US “leaders” have shown one thing it’s that the big corpo is all that matters and the little working man can get fucked.

A buddy of mine told me he ignored the ISP letters but then his internet provider said they wouldn’t provide him service anymore so he got a VPN to resolve the situation. Pricing is fucking CRAZY now. I was fine paying for a VPN when they had 3 year plans for like 60 bucks but nowadays? Wtf are they smoking.

You have a few options. Just get a tor router. It's a one time purchase and free. Sites are more likely to block tor traffic but there are ways around it. Even contact me and I can help if need be.

Second, if it still is a thing ,you can get 10 gigs of free data from windscribe. I used to use that to download movies. 10 gigs a month free for spam posting on twitter and giving them a throwaway email.

average median Steam game sells shockingly poorly even though it was a good game. GOG games sell practically zero when one can just make a little change to the address and download the same game for free without making any accounts and giving credit card info away.

If I would decide approving a game project now, I would only decide to fund always-online game with Denuvo if it was single-player game and would push for important online component also.

If something I pirate is actually good I will buy it. Most things are simply not worth buying however. It’s also faulty logic when people claim 1 copy pirated equals 1 loss of sales. 99% of things aren’t worth buying and if they weren’t piratable I still wouldn’t have bought it. Standard theft of limited physical items also isn’t 1 to 1 since you can’t digitally copy a tomato how you can a file.

VPNs have definitely gotten a lot more expensive. For example Nord discontinued their 3 year plan and raised their prices. Many such cases.

You’re mostly wrong about piracy shitting on the little guy. For Indy game or self published products or something sure. But those are usually cheap anyways. No fucking way am I feeling sorry for Disney or EA or Apple TV for streaming something that I wouldn’t have bought from them anyway and it’s the big players that have massively consolidated everything over time.

But look, I really don’t give a shit — Gabe Newell was right that piracy is a mostly services and/or quality problem and I’ll leave it at that. You better believe the true masterpieces are things I want to physically own. But those are rare and other times the platform is too shitty or the price too high etc etc. For example the vast majority of modern games are no where near worth 70 fucking dollars + their slew of micro transaction garbage. Games are just another avenue for these companies to milk people now. Gog is actually great though and I wish more people used them.

Also those companies love to subscription models mostly because SaaS sub model makes a shitting assload of money over time compared to a one and done front loaded charge. The fact that you blame piracy for that makes me genuinely wonder if you’re some rich corpo or something.
