Do short people just not go out or are all the height statistics wrong

Many of the dudes I thought were huge like 6'2-6'3 were actually only 6'0 flat, idk why but I seem to overestimate how tall people are. An example being I see (X) he looks like his way taller than me but when I look into a mirror I reach his eye level so he isn't really as tall as I assume.
