I noticed that when I looked at pictures of Gaza before what just happened recently it looked quite clean for a place so dense, and despite having limited land and resources, its development is not so bad considering the circumstances. It doesn't have a proper government, movement of goods and people are restricted heavily by Israel. In fact it is higher than the development levels of India according to the HDI Index.
India HDI : 0.633
Gaza HDI : 0.699
Brief overview of HDI -
The Human Development Index (HDI) is a statistical composite index of life expectancy, education (mean years of schooling completed and expected years of schooling upon entering the education system), and per capita income indicators, which is used to rank countries into four tiers of human development. A country scores a higher level of HDI when the lifespan is higher, the education level is higher, and the gross national income GNI (PPP) per capita is higher.
HDI isn't the only indicator of a country's development levels, however I think it gives us an indicative of certain aspects of a country, so it's worthwhile considering.
