Carl Schmitt explains how every democracy must inevitably devolve into what he calls the "Total State."
Because the government in a liberal democracy bases its legitimacy on "the will of the people," the state inevitably expands into every area where that will is expressed.
Politics seeps into everything. Social issues become matters of state, personal beliefs become political positions, and things that were once outside the reach of politics are now defined by it.
Eventually, even the concept of “the political” loses its meaning because there is no longer anything outside of politics.
