DARVO - Wikipedia
DARVO is a tactic used by a perpetrator to avoid accountability for their actions. As the acronym suggests, DARVO commonly involves these steps:
- The perpetrator denies the harm or abuse ever took place.
- When confronted with evidence, the perpetrator then attacks the person that they had harmed, or are still harming. The attacker may also attack the victim's family and/or friends.
- Finally, the perpetrator claims that they were or are actually the victim in the situation, thus reversing the positions of victim and offender.[2][4] It often involves not just playing the victim but also victim blaming.[3]
- Deny – “That’s not true! You’re just making things up!”
- No matter how much evidence you have, they flat-out refuse to acknowledge reality. Gaslighting at its finest.
- Attack – “You’re bitter/incel/insecure for even bringing this up!”
- Instead of engaging with the argument, they go straight for character assassination. If they can make you the problem, they don’t have to address the actual issue.
- Reverse Victim & Offender – “Ugh, incels are always refusing help! I’m just trying to help by telling them to off themselves!”
- Suddenly, they’re the real victim. You pointing out their hypocrisy or falsehoods makes them feel "unsafe," while you, the actual victim of their manipulation, are now framed as the aggressor.
