I’ve had many years of country living. The cats stay outside around the house and the woods to eat rodents and insects. That’s one use. The dogs have a similar role of watching over the land and barking if something is wrong.
But I agree that in a place like an apartment dogs and cats don’t have much use.

But from a utility perspective, it's better not to eat dogs, since they can defend your home (and be a very loud alarm that can bite intruders KEK), and they're also very useful for farmers. Dogs have been domesticated to see humans are part of their pack. And so even for survival purposes, it's better not to eat dogs, as they can help you hunt and kill prey, and also efficiently bring it to you if it's small game.
They also arguably have higher consciousness and intelligence, and you could make the case that higher intellect creatures shouldn't be eaten because they have greater awareness (of themselves and their surroundings) and sensory processes. I'd defer to the mirror test here. If an animal is capable of recognizing itself in the mirror and know that it's a reflection, it shouldn't be eaten.
