At some points in prehistory, even as much as 17 women were reproducing for every 1 man, meaning 16 out of every 17 men failed to reproduce. The numbers weren't that skewed for most of prehistory though, it was typically more in alignment with the 80/20 rule, but yeah, the genetic evidence is clear that the top males won out.
