When the land was transferred to the Belgian government, it actually made an effort to develop the region, building up the cities, infrastructure, etc., making Congo one of the more prosperous parts of sub-Saharan Africa for its inhabitants. Since the Belgians left in the 1960s, the Congo has only stagnated or in some cases even regressed
