The boy, identified as C.B., was reportedly locked in a cage and forced into a dark closet multiple times while attending St. Mary’s Junior and Senior High School.
Allegations of Abuse
The lawsuit, filed by Heather and Jeff Bahner, outlines repeated abuse by Albert Bahret, a paraprofessional assigned to assist C.B. with his special education needs. The Banhers allege:
- C.B. was placed in a cage used to store athletic equipment and photographed there by Bahret.
- He was shoved into a dark utility closet, referred to as the “Seclusion Closet,” on multiple occasions.
- Bahret yelled derogatory words at C.B., compared him to an animal, and circulated the photo among school staff.
- The abuse caused C.B. to regress severely: he now refuses to leave home, no longer speaks, punches himself in the head, and has begun ripping out his own hair, leaving bald patches.
Physical Harm and Neglect
The lawsuit further claims that:
- Bahret yanked the boy by the shirt collar, obstructing his airway and causing him to gasp and beg for air.
- He allegedly struck C.B. in the neck and/or face inside the Seclusion Closet.
- C.B. was made to stay in soiled clothing and denied food during lunch.
- These actions were described by staff as “tough love” and “how you have to handle him.”
Lack of Accountability
The lawsuit accuses the Kaw Valley School District, special education teacher Taylor Hurla, and special education director Sarah Sanders of:
- Ignoring staff concerns and previous complaints about Bahret’s conduct.
- Failing to intervene to protect C.B.
- Hiding the abuse from C.B.’s parents.
District Response
Superintendent Kerry Lacock responded in a statement:

Summary of Diagnoses
According to the lawsuit, C.B. suffers from:

- Dysphagia
- ADHD
- Developmental delay
- Speech delay
- Atrial septal defect (heart condition)
