even crazier is that turkmenistan is probably the world's strictest dictatorship after north korea yet they have a (relatively) pretty high GDP per capita. idk if that actually means anything important but it does seem very unusual for such authoritarian countries
Yeah, that's rather bizzare. I've seen some economists accuse their government of falsifying their data, but even in special analyses specifically taking that into account, Turkmenistan's GDP per capita numbers usually still come out closer to Kazakhstan than their other neighbours, so I guess the country just happens to be pretty well-run despite being an insanely restrictive dictatorship.
