Nobody from that era, well at least until the GFC, would've possibly conceived that the 2010's would be so much worse than the 2000's. It was a time of war, paranoia and (what we thought) was serious cultural degradation. Most people, even people who voted against him, thought Obama would at least end the whole race thing that consumes America...JFL how that turned out.

But sure enough here we are desperate to go back. I suppose now that we are all convinced the 2020's will be even more dystopian than the 2010's we will (hopefully, please god hopefully) have our expectations subverted again in the opposite direction.

Some of us do. And some of us realize how badly young people today are being screwed over. It's as if we boomers have colonized the future - we dump our debt, our pollution, our social problems, our ignoring climate change etc, there and act as if nobody will be hurt. The state practically paid me to get two college degrees. My out of pocket costs to get them, less Pell grants and etc, was under $2000. You can get two degrees too, it just will cost a five-figure debt yoke that will hamper you forever. I was earning $6.85 an hour as a 19-year-old department manager in an off-brand department store in 1978. That's $26.30 an hour today. Who earns that much these days working at a store? I rented a furnished apartment for $230 a month in a decent complex that shared a border with the store I worked at. It cost me nothing to "commute". A filling, kind of nutrious, multi-course meal at the store snack bar was under $5. A fifth was $5. A lid of pot was $15. My first car cost me $800 and I drove it for four years. I didn't realize at the time how good I had it. I do realize now how bad you fellows have it. You really need to start voting for the people who have your interests at heart, not those who can yell and threaten the most.
