I think standards for priesthood are ironically less lax today. In the Middle Ages, the Clergy was basically "socially accepted NEETdom" and any moderately smart kid could become a monk or priest. Now, if you don't have true faith, you will probably be identified as a LARPer by your superiors or lose the motivation on your own over time.
