If priests could get married and have kids, they would have challenged the power of Kings and other nobles.
This is interesting IMHO, because it means that at least at the time sexual activity was taken into account when considering privileges and inequalities.
Nowadays, we're supposed to believe this does not matter at all, that it's just something personal and thus irrelevant for the establishment of rules in society.
