Not a lot of contact with an authentic central or eastern European until college for me, even then it was only Russian.
That seems exaggerated. I don't think Ukrainian and Russian languages are that close. Otherwise the recent linguistic Laws in Ukraine would not have been such an important part in the conflict.

Ukraine used to be called Little Russia back then from 18th century and onward until Bolshevik era when the people decided rename themselves as Ukraine.
