This literally happened to me as well. I got pranked by a popular chad and tyrone. I was the new kid in school and the supposed hottest girl in school got a couple of her friends (not exactly orbiters, but part of the same popular kids clique) to go up to me and say that she's interested in me and encouraged me to ask her out (I heard it later that it was actually her who put them up to it). They must thought I was I naive as well. I just went "oh really? cool man, thanks for telling me" and just went on like nothing happened. They were probably looking for a story to spread about me and bully me with it.
I think it was this one episode in my experiences that later made me suspicious of any kind of niceness or polite behavior by people in general, but mostly women. People have only ever been nice to me when they need something from me. You would do well to treat that like a general rule about people. Being nice for its own sake is extremely rare (they'd have to be a pure innocent soul or some kind of high spiritual person).
