Since I do this, whenever I am getting off a train or walking down the street and I see a girl I wonder if they do the same. For example the other day I was getting off the train and a girl was getting off at the same stop. I was waiting by the only set of doors waiting for them to open and I noticed out the corner of my eye that she stood up seen me and then stayed standing by her seat until the train stopped rather than walk and wait by the doors like most people do as that would mean she'd be next to me.
Little things like this are what hurt your "confidence" in my opinion. It doesn't need to be a rejection as things like this are a rejection in themselves.
