We all seen posters like this one. It’s heartbreaking how normies love to talk about "anti-bullying" and promote the idea of inclusivity, but when someone who’s been bullied opens up about their own pain, it’s ignored. I’ve been there. Growing up, I was bullied relentlessly. I was made to feel unwanted, and I still feel unwanted. And now, when I try to talk about it, when I finally find the courage to admit how much it hurt, I’m told to “get over it” or that I’m being too sensitive. It’s like people can’t handle the idea that guys are deeply affected by bullying too. The trauma doesn’t just vanish because people don’t want to hear about it. It stays with you, shaping how you see yourself and how you trust others.

Symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder among targets of school bullying - Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Health

Bullying in schools is a pervasive issue that significantly impacts students' mental health, often leading to symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A study published in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Healthexamined the association between school bullying and PTSD symptoms among students.
Study Overview
The research aimed to determine whether students who experience bullying are more likely to develop PTSD symptoms compared to their peers who are not bullied. The study involved a sample of 219 German children and adolescents, including 150 students from grades six to ten and 69 patients from an outpatient clinic for PTSD as a comparison group. Symptoms of PTSD were assessed using the Children’s Revised Impact of Event Scale (CRIES) and the Posttraumatic Symptom Scale (PTSS-10).
Key Findings
- Prevalence of Bullying: Among the school sample, 69 students (46.0%) had experienced bullying, with 43 (28.7%) reporting moderate bullying and 26 (17.3%) reporting severe bullying.
- PTSD Symptoms in Bullied Students: Approximately 50% of students who experienced severe bullying reached the critical cut-off point for suspected PTSD. The scores for PTSD symptoms were significantly higher in bullied students compared to non-bullied students.
- Comparison with PTSD Patients: No significant differences were found between patients from the PTSD clinic and students who experienced severe bullying, indicating that the severity of PTSD symptoms in bullied students was comparable to those diagnosed with PTSD.
These findings underscore the severe impact that bullying can have on students' mental health, potentially leading to PTSD.
