Garden hermits or ornamental hermits were hermits encouraged to live in purpose-built hermitages, follies, grottoes, or rockeries on the estates of wealthy landowners, primarily during the 18th century. Such hermits would be encouraged to dress like druids and remain permanently on site, where they could be fed, cared for, and consulted for advice, or viewed for entertainment.[1]

The requirements for life as a decorative hermit are known from newspaper advertisements. The best-known example of the employment of a decorative hermit can be found for Painshill Park,an estate of the landed nobleman Charles Hamilton (1704–1786), which was converted at great cost into a landscape garden with typical grotto, neo-Gothic and Chinese architecture, serpentine paths and a tree house as a hermitage. [2] Hamilton allegedly placed an advertisement that £700 would be earned by those who were willing to "stay at the Hermitage for seven years, where they were to be provided with a Bible, glasses, a doormat, a straw bag as a pillow, an hourglass as a timepiece, water as a drink and food from the house. He had to wear a woolen robe and under no circumstances was he allowed to cut his hair, beard and nails, roam beyond the boundaries of Mr. Hamilton's possessions, or even exchange a word with the servant." [3]
