I miss the respect and decency I was afforded when I was in a country where I was considered attractive.
"I got back from a trip to North America a few months ago (I live in Australia) and one thing I miss is how men actually treated me like I was visible. They would buy me drinks at bars, say hello and wish me a nice day in the street and one lovely old man even gave me free biscuits at his kiosk because I’m ‘a beautiful girl’. But it’s not just obvious stuff like that that I really miss, it’s stuff like eye contact and saying ‘excuse me’ when they’re in my way. Something I had never experienced with men where I live, was acknowledgment. I was genuinely surprised by it. Is this what it’s like to be treated like a person?
Here at home people are endlessly trying to advise me on how to be more appealing to men (even as a friend) but the truth of the matter is, only women they find attractive get to be treated as people by them, and my experience overseas proves that. American men aren’t better, they just happen to find me more attractive than Australian men do."
