I think it's becoming like CG did by the mid-2000s. People were just getting a bit tired of it and started to crave things that were more real or at least looked more real.
Not that it's not used heavily these days, but generally speaking it doesn't get the spotlight and just works in the background, because people want to feel like things are real, for the most part.
As for AI-created "cartoons"... that's a different thing but definitely seems to lack the depth of human-created stuff.
